DUIGAN & GILBERT IN CAPE TOWN (article first published : 2004-01-25)

Making up a multi award-winning South African musical duo, well-known KZN pianist Christopher Duigan and opera star Angela Gilbert will present a Summer Concert in the Mary Jagger Hall at Herschel Girls School, Claremont in Cape Town, on February 6 at 20h00.

Hailed as "the finest export this country has produced in the field of opera" (The Daily News), Angela Gilbert has contracts throughout the world extending to 2008, when she will take on the superstar title role in Donizetti's Maria Stuarda at the San Diego Opera in the United States. This year she will be involved as the Queen of the Night in a new production of Mozart's The Magic Flute at New York's world-renowned Metropolitan Opera.

A feature of Angela Gilbert's forthcoming Cape Town appearance will be her lively and informal presentation style, combining world-class singing with a rare and engaging stage presence. After her recent Cardiff Singer of the World performance in the UK, a BBC reviewer exclaimed "Gilbert has the ability to make opera sexy." Another enthusiast wrote: "Forget elitism, Gilbert rocks!"

Joining the soprano at the piano will be her long-time musical partner, Christopher Duigan. A prize-winning artist in his own right, Duigan counts the Adolph Hallis and Unisa awards among his own. As a soloist he has played extensively in South Africa and the UK, and last season received rapturous acclaim for his performance of Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No 2 at sold-out concerts with the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra.

Their recital will include Angela Gilbert's debut performances of Mozart's notoriously taxing Queen of the Night arias. The programme also includes a selection of arias and songs by Puccini, Verdi and Rachmaninoff, as well as piano solos by Handel and Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue.

Noted for the special platform chemistry of their joint recitals, they create a sense of personal encounter with audiences, lacing their music-making with informal dialogue and amusing anecdotes to enliven the repertoire they perform.

Guests are invited to meet the artists after their performance over a complimentary glass of wine, and to sample Wedgewood's exquisite homemade nougat. The performance is sponsored by MR Woolham & Associates, Insurance Brokers.

Tickets R80 reserved on 083 742 7497. Student discounts are available.
