DEATH OF BRUCE HOSKING (article first published : 2004-01-25)

Bruce Hosking, former Board member of NAPAC, the Natal Performing Arts Council (now the Playhouse Company) and major role player in the Playhouse Trust died in Durban earlier this month.

“Bruce was one of those stalwarts who work behind the scenes - usually unknown and almost invisible to the general public - but so enormously important to an organisation,” says Robert Cross, former General Director of NAPAC, who worked with Bruce for many years.

Bruce Hosking was originally appointed to the Board of NAPAC by the national Minister for the Arts, expressly tasked with scutinising the organisation’s finances. He served for many years on the NAPAC Board and then on its Executive Committee and, finally, as Chairman of the Board.

“He was an amazing fundraiser with an astonishing network of contacts and collected many hundreds of thousands of Rands for NAPAC itself and for some of its special projects,” adds Robert. “He found money for The Playhouse Trust so that it could send Linda Bukhosini and Bongani Tembe, then two talented young members of the NAPAC Singers, to the Julliard School in New York where they developed the talents that have made them such important figures in the arts in this province today.

"He was the most selfless person I have known," Robert adds. "He gave us untold hours of his time and his deep concern for all aspects of the organisation was inspiring to all of us."

Anyone wishing to donate to the Marc Rubenheimer/Ethel Kirken Bursary Fund in Bruce Hosking’s memory should contact Craig Jones on 031 570 5300 or write to him at Garlicke & Bousfield Inc, PO Box 1219, Umhlanga, 4051.
