ROCKY HORROR AUDITIONS (article first published : 2003-12-31)

The Barnyard Theatre is to host a return season of Richard O’Brien’s The Rocky Horror Show and there is a chance for local performers to try out for a role in the world’s most famous rock ‘n roll musical.

The Durban auditions will take place on at 13h00 on January 13, at The Barnyard Theatre at Gateway. Auditioning hopefuls for the roles of Janet, Riff Raff, Eddie, Dr Scott, and Phantoms will be Ian von Memerty (who will direct the show) along with representatives of The Barnyard Theatre Productions who have secured the rights to stage the show.

The cult show runs at the Barnyard at Gateway from May 18 to July 25 after having enjoyed a hugely successful sold out run at the venue in 2002. The Rocky Horror Show has enjoyed a colourful track record in South Africa and the film was banned after four weeks on circuit. Now, with over 600 productions world-wide, the raunchy and enticing musical kicks off a year-long national tour at The Barnyard Theatre at Gateway where it enjoyed a nine week run previously.

The Rocky Horror Show tells the story of the misadventures of Brad and Janet, two hapless virgins from Denton who lose their way on a dark and stormy night. They seek help from the orally-inclined transsexual Transylvanian, Dr Frank ‘n Furter, at a haunted castle where time has no meaning. Although virtue is compromised and finally lost on that fateful night, good finally triumphs over evil.
