A TOUCH OF BRASS (article first published : 2003-11-20)

Themi Venturas Productions and Nuts 4 Music (Stacey Almond) present A Touch of Brass as the second Classical Champagne Concert at the Catalina Theatre on Wilsons Wharf.

Held on the last Sunday of every month, these concerts promise an exciting new event for lovers of light classical music and will include the best of local and international musical artists.

A Touch of Brass features three young Swiss musicians who are the Principal players from the lower brass section of the KZN Philharmonic: brothers Eric and David Rey (tuba and trombone) and Frederic Theodoloz (bass trombone). They have put together an interesting and refreshing brass programme with piano accompaniment by the respected German-born pianist and conductor Gerhard Geist.

All three players came to Durban in 2002 from Switzerland, where they studied with the leading brass teachers at the Conservatoire of Music in Geneva. All three gained distinctions and top awards in their final studies. They have won many international competitions and study grants between them and have played with the renowned Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, the Berner Philharmonic, Verbier Festival Youth Orchestra, Lausanne orchestra and the National Orchestra of Portugal.

They taught at major music schools and conservatoires before settling in South Africa. David and Frederic are now lecturing in their chosen instruments at the University of Natal Durban. As well as teaching, Eric speaks four languages!

Recently settled in Durban, the trio aims to show the public that brass instruments and their music can be fun.

The programme includes Vaughan Williams' Concerto for Bass Tuba; Schumans’ Three Romances for Piano and Oboe (played on the bass trombone); Concerto no. 1 for bass trombone by Alexandre Lebedev; and sonatas by Stjepan Sulek and Kazimierz Serocki for Trombone.

This feast of classics played in a lighthearted manner is perfect for a lazy Sunday brunch enjoyed with a glass of champagne and tasty finger buffet at the Catalina Theatre in the scenic surroundings of Wilson's Wharf.

Touch of Brass will be performed at The Catalina on November 23 at 12h00. To book phone 031 305 6889.
