MR PERSONALITY (article first published : 2003-11-19)

Mr Personality, the latest brainchild of Aaron McIlroy, who created the hit shows Abba Maniacs and The Loser, is back at the Catalina Theatre for a short two-week season from November 25.

This hilarious musical comedy is jam packed with Aaron’s unique brand of energetic, zany humour and “gentle audience abuse”. A host of eccentric characters are introduced when McIlroy takes a side-splitting satirical look at the world of reality TV and asks the question “Have you got what it takes to be Mr Personality?”

Seen through the eyes of this wacky and well-known, award winning comedian and TV personality, the audience is enlightened in the comical aspects of the “inherent cruelty” to which people expose themselves in this increasingly popular form of small screen entertainment.

Featuring McIlroy in his second solo musical comedy, this 90 minute show includes popular music from artists such as Robbie Williams, Eminem, Queen’s We Will Rock You, Tomorrow Never Comes and parodies of several well known numbers. (With apologies to the original artists).

Mr Personality was co-written by a formidable duo – Aaron, whose nationwide solo comedy The Loser won him the Vita Award for best comedy actor last year and Greig Coetzee, most recognised for his multi-award winning shows – White Men with Weapons and Breasts.

Mr Personality opens at the Catalina Theatre on November 25 with performances Tuesdays to Saturdays at 20h00 and on Sundays at 18h00. Tickets R65 (R50 on Tuesdays and Sundays). Book at the theatre on 031 305 6889. Block bookings of 20 or from Sharon on 083 486 3271.
