LALELA MUSICAL (article first published : 2003-11-13)

Durban’s Eager Artists Theatre Company headed by South African playwright Jerry Pooe is back on the Durban theatre scenes with Jerry’s new work Lalela” Musical. The show is a collaboration of Durban directors and choreographers Jerry Pooe (scriptwriter and director), Boyzie Cekwane on choreography, Madala Kunene and Patty Nokwe on the musical side. The show takes place at the Pieter Scholtz Open Air Theatre, University of Natal, from November 25 for a short season.

Lalela, a Southern Africa musical dealing with the importance of the relationship between human, nature and animals. This is a colourful celebration of life and the beauty of Africa. The play itself is a call to people to live peacefully, it also reminds them of their culture and heritage. It is the blowing of the horn for the rebirth of Africa, a call for Africa to celebrate its pride.

This is a three year project funded by National Arts Council and receiving support from DIT Drama Studies. An exciting project where young Eager Artists are being trained to perform indigenous instruments by masters of different instruments under the leadership of Patti Nokwe and Madala Kunene, with exciting choreography by Boysie Cekwane, Sbo Ndaba of Phenduka Dance Company, Vusabantu Ngema, Thomas Mpoeleng and Jabulani Mfeka.

The future of the project sees a performance in the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown in 2004 and an American tour in November 2004 to Jan 2005.

Performances of Lalela are given from November 25 to December 5 at 19h00 and Sunday shows at 18h00. For more information and bookings call Eager Artists on 031 305 1624.
