THE BIRDS OF PRAY TOUR (article first published : 2003-10-24)

Big Concerts International in association with Edgars and 5fm Music have announced the return to South Africa of one of rock’s most celebrated bands on a nationwide tour. Super-group LIVE will perform in Durban on Novemer 25 (Johannesburg Nov 22/Cape Town Nov 28).

Their shows in 2000 were described as “a stage ignited with searing rock and hyperactive energy” and audiences “had their socks rocked off”. Now, LIVE are heading down to rock South Africa having performed at string of spring festivals in the States. The bands most recent European tour saw them playing to over 700,000 people as special guests on the Bon Jovi tour, and headlining their own show where Coldplay and Supergrass were their special guests.

LIVE, a band that came of age in the early 90’s, has just released their sixth album, Birds of Pray. Singer Ed Kowalczyk, guitarist Chad Taylor, bassist Patrick Dahlheimer, and drummer Chad Gracey first performed together 16 years ago at their school talent show in York, Pennsylvania.

After earning a rapid local following their debut album Mental Jewelry was released in 1991, and it was three years later, that the album Throwing Copper propelled the band into the rock mainstream. With its deep spiritual imagery and singer Ed Kowalczyk’s powerful vocals, Throwing Copper heralded the hits, I Alone, Selling Drama, and Lightning Crashes. The band’s third album Secret Samadhi with its thoughtful verses and hardcore choruses was released in 1997.

A few years later, LIVE’s fourth album The Distance To Here was followed by their highly successful, sold-out SA tour, attended by almost 80,000 screaming fans. Melodies soared like never before, which was evident on standout tracks like Run To The Water, They Stood Up For Love, and The Dolphins Cry. Last year V was also a hit, featuring the song that became the soundtrack for all affected by the September 11 tragedy.

With nearly 20 million albums sold, LIVE continues to be a solid force around the world. Their successes include two No. 1 albums on the Billboard Top 200 album chart, five No. 1 singles and nine Top 10 singles.

LIVE will perform at the Durban Exhibition Centre on November 25. Book at Computicket or www.5fm.co.za LIVE’s official website is www.friendsoflive.com
