INCOGNITO (article first published : 2003-10-24)

The UK's most innovative and acclaimed acid jazz / funk / soul group - the 14 piece band, Incognito is coming to South Africa for two concerts only. These will take place in Durban at the ICC on October 30 and in Johannesburg on October 31 at the Newtown Music Hall (Former Mega Music).

Incognito, who have created and established a distinct sound, do not have a recognised regular line-up of band members instead many top musicians have been involved in creating the ever-evolving and profound music of Incognito. The driving force behind this well-established, internationally-acclaimed band is Jean-Paul 'Bluey' Maunick, born in the Island of Mauritius.

Since the inception of Incognito in 1981, many musicians have been involved in musical projects with Incognito. Rather than focusing on individuals, equal credit is given for their contributions. This approach, to quote Bluey himself, "promotes and encourages the talents of the musicians and in turn teaches all of us humility and a sense of sharing that is not usually present in most other bands".

The prolific and hard working band have released an incredible nine albums - sometimes creating more than one a year - most recently Who Needs Love released last year, Life Stranger Than Fiction (2001); The Best Of Incognito (2000) and Future Remixed (2000).

'Every record is a soundtrack to my life's journeys, so living life to the full is the key for me. I've been using my musical career as a ticket to see as much of this planet as possible, travelling is inspirational," said Bluey in a February interview with HMV.

According Bluey " if all I had to do all year round was to produce records in a studio, I would feel frustrated, I would be missing the road and the connection to audiences. And if I had to play only songs, I would miss the instrumentals. If I had the instruments only, I would miss the songs. So, where we are lucky is that Incognito appeals to musicians, clubbers because of our remixes and our attitude to dance music- because we ourselves are clubbers and not just musicians - and it appeals to the people looking for songs."

'There's always an element of conscious and sub-conscious to every creative process. Incognito's sound was founded from the musical tastes of Paul 'Tubbs' Williams and myself. Our record collections reflect our musical directions, and our music is best described as eclectic. "

Incognito is brought to South Africa by the British Council. Tickets R120 and the concert takes place at the International Convention Centre (ICC) on 20h00 on October 30. Book at Computicket. Enquiries and bookings on 011 340 8000 or 083 915 8000.
