WINSTON "MANKUNKU" FOR RAINBOW (article first published : 2003-10-16)

For the final Castle Milk Stout gig of the year on November 2 , the Rainbow Restaurant and Jazz Club in Pinetown has announced that the featured group will be the Winston Mankunku Ngozi Quintet.

“Since Nicola and I took over the reins at the Rainbow in 2001, this is the one act that we have been trying to get. Mankunku was always Ben Pretorius's (Rainbow’s founder) favourite South African saxophonist and his epic track, Yakhal Inkomo rightfully holds a special place in the hearts of regular supporters of the Rainbow. Mankunku's Quintet was the main act performing on June 10, 2001, when it was first suggested to Nicola and I that we consider taking the Rainbow forward. Now, with the Centre for Jazz & Popular Music coming on board, we finally have the resources to bring the band to Durban.”

Joining Mankunku for this performance will be the all-star line-up that he has taken to using since the release of his latest album, Abantwana Be Africa on the Sheer Sound label. The quintet features Mankunku on sax, Prince Lengoase on trumpet and flugelhorn, Andile Yenana on piano, Herbie Tsoaeli on bass and Lulu Gontsana on drums.

The doors open at 1h00 with the show starting at 13h00. Tickets R40 at the door or in advance. (There is a R10 discount for Rainbow Jazz Club members and a 10% discount for Independent on Saturday Celebrate Durban Club members)

The group will also perform at TransAfrica Express at the BAT Centre on October 31 with the show starting at 21h00. Tickets R50.
