NTOKOZO XABA (article first published : 2003-09-19)

Ntokozo Xaba, a Masters student at the University of Natal, Opera School and Choral Academy, will perform two arias by Mozart for the Friends of Music on September 23 at 19h45 at the Durban Jewish Club in Old Fort Road.

Presented in the Prelude Performers Series which is funded by the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund, Ntokozo will sing the concert aria, Vorrei spiegarvi, Oh Dio! (K 418), and the Queen of the Night’s celebrated “Vengeance Aria”, Der Hölle Rache from Act II of Die Zauberflöte. She will be accompanied by the well-known Durban pianist, Andrew Warburton.

Ntokozo joined local music group The Dynamics in 1993 and toured England, Finland and Russia in 1997. She has performed regularly in Durban including several lunch-hour concerts presented by the UND School of Music and guest performances with the KwaZulu-Natal Philharmonic Orchestra.

In 2002 she was selected to participate in a student exchange with the University of Göteborg in Sweden. Last year she appeared as a soloist in the UND Opera Gala Concert at The Playhouse in Durban. This was followed by her tour with the William Kentridge Company singing the soprano solos in Confessions of Zeno by the acclaimed South African composer, Kevin Volans. She is currently studying the role of the Gretel in Humperdinck’s opera, Hansel and Gretel which will be showing at the Playhouse during the Christmas season.

Ntokozo Xaba’s appearance will precede the evening’s main programme of chamber music by Mozart, Beethoven and Schumann to be performed by the acclaimed visiting Aviv Quartet, with guest artist being Israeli pianist, Dror Biran.

Tickets R60 (R50 Friends of Music members and R15 students). Book through Computicket or on 011 340 8000.
