VUMILE NOJIKELE (article first published : 2003-09-14)

On September 17 at 12h45, Durban Arts will present its regular weekly free lunch-hour concerts on the City Hall Steps.

The main performers of the concert will be Vumile Nojikelele, a band formed in 2001 at Vuma Arts Centre, where the members met and first played together, having appeared in various maskanda bands around KwaZulu Natal. Vumile Mngoma is the leader of this four piece band and four vocalists. She had appeared in the 1999-2000 Pulse of Africa Extravaganza and, in her previous group, had been singing traditional music for three years. She also worked with Ikhwezi Le Africa in 2000-2001.

The group comprises Vimile (lead vocalist), Qunisile Mngoma, Tho Joyisa and Phumzile Mlangeni (vocalists and dancers), Nkosinathi Shangase (bass guitar), Thokozani Mhlongo (lead guitar), Mthoko Mthethwa (drums) and Bheki Khalala (keyboard). They have performed at the Playhouse, Bat Centre, Vuma Arts Centre, Isipingo Prize and Pride regular performances and Russels. More details from Vumile Mngoma on 031 261 3711 or 073 173 7480.

The curtain raiser will be the kwaito band Skwatar. Next up on The Steps on September 23 will be curtain raiser The Gang (R&B) followed by the main attraction, Pele Pele which is a maskanda group.
