SHARON BACK FOR AWESOME! (article first published : 2003-08-25)

South African Grammy-nominee and international performer, Sharon Katz, returns home to Durban with her world-class band for a performance at the Awesome Africa Festival on September 24 at 17h00 in Albert Park.

The performance marks the 10-year anniversary of Katz’s 1993 musical extravaganza, When Voices Meet,” which showcased a 500-voice multicultural choir and 10-piece band to herald South Africa’s democracy. Later that year, as the performers travelled around the country onboard The Peace Train, they were joined by Ladysmith Black Mambazo.

Sharon is inviting all the original choir members to join in the performance and festivities at Albert Park on September 24. In addition to their 90’s hit songs Gabi Gabi, We Are The Children of South Africa and Siyajabula, the concert will also feature tracks from her new Grammy-nominated CD, Imbizo.

Traveling back to South Africa with Sharon on this tour are 35 American fans. After the Durban concert, they will travel with the band for concerts in Johannesburg, Mabopane and Cape Town.

In addition to Katz on guitar, the band features Durban’s Nhlanhla Brian Thusi and George Mari on trumpets, Roland Moses (keyboards) and Thokozani Mkhize and Gugu Mzobe on vocals; America’s Junius Pop Wilson (bass), Eric Roberts (drums) and Lynn Riley (saxophone); and the Congo’s Elie Kihonia (percussion). The legendary Dolly Rathebe is a special guest on the tour.

Performers from When Voices Meet and The Peace Train can contact Sharon or Malcolm on 031 201 9392 or 084 455 6608 for more details and rehearsal schedules. E-mail Sharon on SharonKatz2000@aol.com or visit www.SharonKatz.com
