TRAVELLERS (article first published : 2003-08-24)

Travellers in Pietermaritzburg is a live music venue offering a wide range of contemporary music.

August 29: Alternative evening featuring DJ Wicked Mike and the Durban based band Sutherland presenting a Metallica Party.

Durban metal warriors, Sutherland, will perform a 12 song Metallica set with an attitude Wicked Mike DJing before and after. Metallica's strong new release, St. Anger, will be up for grabs. Sutherland are stalwarts of the Durban muso scene. In the past year they had radioplay on 5FM's Barney Simon show and appeared on the Wicked Rock's Let Us Be Heard and Witchdoctor Records' New Breed 3 CDs. Solid local performances earned them performances on the main stage of Splashy Fen 2003 and a coveted support slot for the recent Entombed South ! African tour. Wicked Mike was the resident DJ at Durban's top rock club, Burn, until he became the driving force behind www.WickedRock.co.za. This has resulted in him DJing at the Tony Hawk extravaganza at Durban's Wavehouse, The Doors in Johannesburg and Zeplin's in Pretoria. He also delivered the American band, SEVEN 13, to South African shores. Cover charge R15.

September 5: Alternative evening featuring Wicked Mike (DJ) with Durban-based bands Sitter and Shivering Jemmy.

Newcomers, Sitter, are rapidly claiming a respectful place on the KZN coast. The four student members give birth to a diversity of music that ranges from pop punk to emotional ballad. This may be the result of their influences that jump from ska and punk to rock and indie. Within one year they’ve recorded the Give Us A Go… demo, were chosen as the first-reserve (placing seventh) out of the 60 bands who entered the East Coast Radio/Vodacom Beach Africa Battle of the Bands, advanced to the quarter finals of the Big Band Breakout and have been signed to Wicked Bands, the booking agency of www.WickedRock.co.za. Additionally, their music will soon appear on three compilations; C-Weed 3, Heaven and Hell and Stolen. In October they will be a support act for the American band Rainshine.

On top of a small hill under an old house lies a dark cellar where a band called Shivering Jemmy come together to create music and practice their songs. The band is fortunate enough to have the best neighbours any aspiring band could wish to have. Instead of complaining about the noise, posing death threats or annoying the police they put little notes in the post box that express sentiments of encouragement like, “You guys rock, good luck!” The band is made up of four very passionate musicians namely Trelanee Skein on vocals, Russell Perks on guitar, Roxanne Baney on bass and Carla Ellis on the drums. Cover charge R15.

September 12: Alternative evening featuring Esjay (Durban) with DJ Dale. This is a band with a vision for bigger and better things. Uninterested in the stereotyped drunken, drug-addicted rockstar image, they have their music set on international success with sparked interest from various American Record Companies. The band came together with a common vision in 2001 and consists of Darren Richter (guitar) Simon Beech (Drums) and Michael McAuley (Bass). Esjay created hype from the very beginning. The band made their debut performance on the main stage at Splashy Fen (2003) and made such an impression that they were asked to be on the front cover of the Daily Times Tonight section the following week and also perform main stage at the Mr Price PRO. Their first single is from the self entitled EP and is called Somewhere. Cover charge R15.

September 19: Alternative evening featuring well known Not My Dog and support band to be decided. Not My Dog first formed in 1996 and its been full speed since then with three e.p.'s released, featuring songs that made it onto national and campus radio station charts. The year 2000 saw the launch of their first full-length album Dogumentary at Oppikoppi Festival. The album featured collaborations with Ready D from Prophets Of Da City, Hamma of Darker Shades of Phunk and Mr. Fat of Brasse Vannie Kaap. Collectively showing that NMD's then hardcore/hiphop sound was going national. Their follow-up album Braai Vibes won the South African Music Award for best album in 2003.

Not My Dog have headlined all major South African festivals including Southern Cross Festival, Woodstock, Oppikoppi, Up the Creek, Bosberock and Kaktus op die Vlaktes and a numerous national tours.
