SIMPLY RED (article first published : 2003-08-22)

Big Concerts International and East Coast Radio have announced the forthcoming arrival of legendary group Simply Red in Durban on September 18.

The British super-group Simply Red promises to paint the country a shade of scarlet when it tours South Africa during the highly anticipated “Home” tour.

Propelled by Mick Hucknall’s voice and passion, Simply Red are unique among their peers. The group effortlessly glides between highly original material and totally exceptional covers of other people’s songs that suddenly become their own. Their trademark blend of funky, soulful pop has kept them on top of their game for over almost two decades.

Those fortunate enough to have seen them perform live in South Africa in June 1999, have described the Simply Red concerts as “an evening of unsurpassed entertainment”, and described Mick Hucknall as “infecting the crowd with his passion” and “a skilled showman”. Playing to over 60,000 people the shows were showered with public and media applause.

Besides showcasing several tracks off their latest album Home Simply Red will perform the “best of”Simply Red. A tour through their most popular songs including Fairground, Stars, Holding Back The Years, Money's Too Tight to Mention and Thrill Me.

“None of the tunes sound old or new,” remarked Mick. “They all sound like they were made yesterday, I’ve added extra horn melodies and changed a couple of structural arrangements in the tunes, and they give it the kind of feeling that everything was made on the same album, which is great”.

Simply Red introduced themselves to the world in 1985 with the hit single Money’s Too Tight (To Mention) taken from their debut album Picture Book which also featured the US number one Holding Back The Years. Picture Book was followed by a string of critically acclaimed and commercially successful albums: Men And Women (1987), A New Flame (1989), Stars (1991), Life (1995), Blue (1998) and Love And The Russian Winter (1999).

Their new album Home is already approaching worldwide sales of one million, and is very much a back to basics Simply Red album revisiting their R&B tinged roots with a gloriously modern twist. Highlights include the hit Fake, Sunrise and the title track Home. The album also contains of Money In My Pocket, You Make Me Feel Brand New and the Bob Dylan classic Positively 4th Street.

Having sold over 45 million albums, these global superstars promise a night of sing along mega-hits, a heartfelt mix of melody and tenderly compelling lyrics.

Simply Red appears on Durban on September 18 at the Westridge Park Stadium, Durban. The group will also perform in Cape Town (September 13), Port Elizabeth (15) and Johannesburg (20).
