THE SONG CIRCLE (article first published : 2003-08-15)

Friends of Music is to present a Song Circle on August 19 with the primary aim of making the art-song form relevant in the 21st Century and to promote the appreciation of this wonderful music.

Pianist Mark Nixon will co-ordinate the group and has compiled the programmes in collaboration with lecturer and broadcaster, Professor Roderick Swanston. Each programme is designed to guide the audience through the various songs – it also aims to inspire them to listen in a new, more informed way. They believe that this kind of programming is a fresh, innovative approach to the art-song recital and is an engaging presentation for audiences.

Roderick Swanston will provide introductions at various points throughout the evening, as a fully-integrated part of the concert. They will include details of the composer’s life, extracts from letters written by the composers (which provide insight into the songs) as well as pertinent details about the poets and historical references. The introductions aim to give the audience “sign posts” to listen for in the music which will enhance their enjoyment of the concert. The concert will include full texts with English translations in the high-quality, printed programmes.

South African soprano Angela Gilbert and German baritone Christian Immler will join Mark Nixon and Roderick Swanston in a celebration of 2003 Anniversary Composers – Hugo Wolf, Hector Berlioz and Roger Quilter.

The concert takes place on August 19 at 19h45 at the Durban Jewish Centre, 44 Old Fort Road.
