KATE NORMINGTON FOR GATEWAY (article first published : 2003-07-19)

Kate Normington one of South Africa’s top musical theatre, cabaret and jazz singers, will perform at the next free concert of the Gateway Philharmonic Orchestra on Juy 20 at 16h00. Back by popular demand is Duncan Royce who will appear with Melanie Roberts. Orchestra soloist Hetty van Wyk will perform the Cello Concerto in B Flat-major by Luigi Boccherini.

From classical music, to breathtaking original music, inspiring ballads, to overtures, tunes from musicals and movies ,the GPO are consistently making their presence felt as a real “rainbow orchestra” who are able to play any style of music from African traditional to symphonic rock!

Previously disadvantaged players are having the opportunity to perform a myriad of different styles, under the visionary musical approach of Artistic Director Philipp Maier. “The unique sound we have created with this orchestra and band, takes time and only evolves when a relationship is built between the players and conductor,” he explains. “The universal appeal of the music is not only the programme choice but the way in which it is played. This takes months of work and we have now worked together over the last two and a half years and it shows!”

Recent auditions have meant that the GPO is steadily finding new talent in KZN, and several members of the Johannesburg Youth Orchestra also travel to Durban for the Concerts. Collaborations with Conductor Mike Hankinson and Stone Music Productions, mean the GPO have access to resources across the nation.

Kate Normington‘s accommodation kindly sponsored by the Beverley Hills, Umhlanga.

In the event of rain the Concert will move to the “getaway Zone” in the Expo Explore Area. Please call Anna-Marie on 031 566 2332 for more details.
