KZNPO SYMPHONY SEASON (article first published : 2003-05-30)

The KZN Philharmonic’s symphony season is well underway with concerts taking place at the Durban City Hall every Thursday at 19h30. Maestro Arjan Tien will be conducting for the rest of the season.

The concert on June 5 will feature a solo performance by the KZN Philharmonic's Principal Trumpet Michel Schneuwly in Zbinden Concerto for Trumpet, Strings and Percussion.The musical menu includes Beethoven's Egmont Overture, four movements of the master's First Symphony followed by performed by Resphighi's Church Windows.

June 12 will feature a solo performance by Aviram Reichert on piano. He will perform Mozart pieces: La Clemenza di Tito Overture, Piano Concerto No 23 and Symphony No 4.

Lovers of the music of Jacques Brel should make a date with the KZNPO on June 19 which will feature a solo performance by Bernard Bruel (vocals), Sébastian Jaudon (piano) and Jean-François (accordion). Singer/songwriter Jacques Brel created and performed a catalogue of thoughtful and theatrical songs which brought him a large, devoted following in France that eventually extended internationally, making him a major influence on English speaking writers and performers worldwide. Join the KZNPO on a nostalgic tour through some of Brel's great music along with a touch of Gershwin and a spot of Antheil.

Young Japanese sensation, Ryu Goto began playing the violin at age three. He made his concert debut at the age of eight, performing Paganini's Violin Concerto with the Pacific Music Festival Orchestra in Sapporo, Japan. The KZNPO concert on June 26 will feature a solo performance by Ryu Goto, now at the tender age of 14. This world famous young virtuoso violinist will make his debut with the KZNPO playing Sibelius' Violin Concerto. This concert is to be filmed by an international crew who are accompanying Ryu on his world tour.

Music lovers can enjoy extra elements of the concert-going experience by attending the orchestra's Morning Symphony and Pre-Concert Talks.

The Morning Symphony offers a perfect way to start the day! Join the KZNPO for the final rehearsal on the day of the concert and catch a glimpse of the techniques, insights and preparation which go into making a concert. Morning Symphony Open Rehearsals take place at the venue of the concert on the day of the concert at 10h00 with the exception of concerts where singers are involved. Entrance R15 (free for subscribers) and includes a cup of tea

Pre-concert talks provide an opportunity to hear interesting perspectives about compositions being performed that evening. Talks are given by local music connoisseurs and are held prior to the evening's concert at 18h15. Check press for venue details. Pay at the door.
