ORCHESTRA CONCERT (article first published : 2003-05-22)

Make music with Richard Cock in the third annual “Orchestra” concert on July 27 at 14h30 at N-Shed - NPA Passenger Terminal on Durban Harbour's T-Jetty.

This unique massed orchestral concert is open to anyone who can read and play music. An exciting musical project it is presented by The British Cultural & Heritage Association ([KZN Branch of The 1820 Settlers Association). Last year over 155 musicians participated in the second ‘Orchestra’ concert which included the marching brass Field Band and dancers.

The N-Shed NPA Passenger Terminal has been generously sponsored by the National Ports Authority. As a concert venue it is centrally based with ample parking and attractive with its view of the bay and the city. Thanks are also due to the KZN Arts & Culture Council for their Project Grant and to Regma for Printing.

Music Kits with scores will be ready for collection shortly.

All participants have to register to play either as individuals or as members of an existing group. Musicians are required to pay a nominal entry fee of R20 per person to participate to cover administration costs. However, bursaries covering the cost of entry fees for disadvantaged groups/musicians are available on request. Bursaries are also available to cover transport costs on the condition that payment was made directly to the transport service. The Field Band Foundation and the KZN Youth Orchestra benefited from bursaries last year.

The concert day will begin with the scheduled rehearsal from 11h30 to 14h00. This is the first time the musicians come together as a group to practice as a unique massed orchestra, indicating the high level of expertise required on the conductor’s part.

We would love to create as much awareness as possible for this unique event - we're aiming for the biggest massed orchestra in Durban - the more, the merrier!” says the Association.

Register to play now on 031 202 6174 or e-mail: orchestra@global.co.za
