NEDBANK MUSIC AT THE LAKE (article first published : 2003-05-3)

The next in Nedbank’s Music At The Lake series in the Durban Botanic Gardens will be a Rock & Swing Concert on May 4 at 14h30. The concert is hosted by the Friends of the Durban Botanic Gardens and will feature Mario Monteregge and his band Music Unlimited.

The programme opens with some high energy rock 'n roll numbers in a tribute to Elvis Presley. Audiences can look forward to well-loved songs such as Return to Sender, Good Luck Charm, Such a Night and Blue Suede Shoes. The pace slows down with some 'the King's' well known and much loved romantic ballads like Crying in the Chapel, In the Ghetto and Just Can't Help Believin'.

Alongside soloist Gary McKenzie, currently appearing at Lango’s Theatre in the Gee Jay’s Stop It I Like It! are the talented musicians who make up the 11-piece Music Unlimited Band, including the well-known Jerry Kunene and Diana Bell on sax, Garth Botha on drums, Brian Thusi on trumpet and Mario himself on trombone.

The second half of the programme moves at a swinging pace with numbers such as Buona Sera Signorina - made famous by Louis Prima, La Bamba and an Italian medley Balla Balla.

Big Band sound has been the hallmark of Music Unlimited and no concert would be complete without some well known favourites such as American Patrol, Little Brown Jug and String of Pearls. Also included in the programme is a catchy Kwela number composed by Jerry Kunene and titled Ekhaya.

The concert begins at 14h30. Tickets R35 (R25 senior citizens, R20 students and Friends of the Gardens - children under 12 years is free) available from Computicket or from the Info Centre in the Gardens or on the day of the concert when the gates open at 12h30.

More information during office hours on 031 202 5819.
