JUNXION (article first published : 2003-04-21)

International opera, jazz and musicals star John Fletcher with Covent Garden and London-based jazz pianist Stephen Higgins will appear at Hilton College Theatre. The occasion is a charity preview of the 2003 South African tour of their award-winning UK show classic junXion on May 9 and 10.

South Africa is among the ten countries left in the world with polio – seven of them in Africa. The artistes have agreed to present the End Polio Tour in aid of the Rotary International 2002-2005 US$400 million Eradication of Polio Campaign which aims to eliminate polio from the world by 2005.

In 2002 John Fletcher and Stephen Higgins toured South Africa with classic junXion, earning a standing ovation at all of its 22 performances and receiving enormous critical and public acclaim. In classic junXion, Fletcher and Higgins present a spectacular programme of music from the best-written end of the modern repertoire, jazz masterpieces and well-known popular classics.

John Fletcher is one of the few classically trained artists who has mastered the art of performing light music. Cambridge and Royal College of Music trained, he is now based in the UK after working at the South African State Theatre Opera in Pretoria. He was the first singer to win the Nelson Mandela Nedbank Arts Award and has done a vast amount of jazz and musicals work both in the UK and abroad.

Leading British classical and jazz pianist, Stephen Higgins is on the staff of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden and Glyndebourne Opera. He recently made his Wigmore Hall debut, leads his own jazz band in London and was musical advisor to the controversial film Hilary and Jackie. Stephen has also worked extensively in South Africa. He was part of the production team of the Spier Festival/Broomhill township Carmen and Passion Plays which took 30 South African singers to London’s West End.

classic junXion is a magnificently lit and staged programme in which Fletcher and Higgins interpret some of the greatest songs ever written in a stylish, sophisticated, witty and dramatic evening of quality material, superb stagecraft, magnificent lighting and musicianship of the highest order.

Performances take place on May 9 at 19h30 and May 10 at 15h30 at Hilton College Theatre. Bookings on 033 343 0126.
