SCHUBERTIAD (article first published : 2003-04-10)

Noted for its lyrical and sensitive qualities, the music of Franz Schubert (1797-1828) is favoured by music connoisseurs and the general public alike. Evenings devoted entirely his music were popular in his own lifetime.

The Music Revival group will host a classical evening on April 27 at No.35 Montgomery Drive, Athlone, Pietermaritzburg.

“For this programme we include the popular Arpeggione sonata, music for piano four-hands and a short selection of songs,” says Music Revival’s Christopher Duigan.

The arpeggione, a six stringed instrument similar to the cello, was invented in Vienna in 1823. Schubert was drawn by its lyrical expressiveness and wrote a superb sonata for the instrument. Now obsolete the sonata is most often played on the cello. The piano duet - four hands at one piano - a popular format which was particularly suited to his intimate “house-music” evenings resulted in Schubert composing more for this combination than any other composer.

The beautiful Lebensstűrme Sonata is performed in this programme. Schubert wrote over 500 songs for voice and piano. Some of these, even though composed at the very youthful age of 18, are masterpieces of the repertoire. A varied selection of songs for baritone and piano are included offering a perfect introduction to this art.

The performers are Boris Kerimov (cello), Richard Salmon (baritone) and Andrew Warburton and Christopher Duigan (piano). The concert lasts 120 minutes including interval.

Booking essential through Christopher Duigan on 033 342-3051 or e-mail: chris@musicrevival.co.za
