SING-A-LONG-A JOSEPH (article first published : 2003-02-19)

South Africa’s most popular and most performed musical – Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat - is back once again. But this time as truly interactive theatre which may yet reach Durban.

For the first time in South Africa, the Johannesburg Civic Theatre offers the Sing-A-Long-A phenomenon to the country. The genre started in 1999 with Sing-A-Long-A Sound of Music.

Sing-A-Long-A Joseph soon followed. And Sing-A-Long-A Abba is now resident in London’s West End!

Audiences can parade in their own technicolor dreamcoat for the fancy dress competition, grab a “magic moments” bag and sing along to favourite Joseph songs like Close Every Door, Any Dream Will Do and Go, Go, Go Joseph, while the action unfolds on the big screen.

The multi-million pound film of the mega-successful London Palladium stage version of Joseph comes to the Johannesburg Civic Theatre with on screen lyrics so everyone can join in. The film features legendary performer Donny Osmond in the title role with Joan Collins, Richard Attenborough, Maria Friedman, Ian McNiece, Alex Jennings and Christopher Biggins.

Hosting the show will be popular entertainer Alvon Collison, celebrating his 35th year in show business. He will be well-remembered in Durban for his performances at Pharoah in the Geoffrey Sutherland productions and has performed Joseph and The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat over 2,000 times; the first 27 years ago alongside Bruce Millar and Richard Loring!

Bernard Jay, CEO of The Johannesburg Civic Theatre, says: “Sing-A-Long-A Joseph will turn up regularly in our own Jo’burg home and we’ll also be taking it around the country to create fun and laughter wherever we can!”

Sing-A-Long-A Joseph and The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat will have performances at The Nelson Mandela Theatre, Johannesburg Civic Theatre from March 20 to 23 with booking at Computicket. More details from The Johannesburg Civic Theatre by visiting: www.showbusiness.co.za
