RICHARDS PERFORMS VOLANS (article first published : 2003-02-19)

World-renowned composer Kevin Volans and outstanding pianist Jill Richards will be in the spotlight at the University of Natal Durban School of Music's first evening concert of the year, to be held at 19h30 at Howard College Theatre on March 12. This concert will be the world premiere of two sets of études for piano specially commissioned by the University of Natal.

Originally from Pietermaritsburg and a former lecturer at the UND School of Music, Volans has been described as "one of the most remarkable musical minds of our time" (International Record Review, May 2000).

Living in Europe in the mid-70's, Volans's work became associated with the beginnings of post-modernism in music. Following several field recording trips in South and southern Africa, he embarked on a series of pieces based on African compositional techniques which quickly established him as a distinctive voice on the European new music circuit.

In the 1990's Volans gave increasing attention to writing for dance, collaborating with several international artists. In 1999, the South Bank hosted a 50th birthday celebration of his work in the Queen Elizabeth Hall, London. Latterly, he has turned his attention to writing for orchestra and to collaborating with visual artists. Other recent commissions include a double string quartet (for the Duke Quartet, London) and a concerto for double orchestra (for the BBC Symphony Orchestra).

Currently based in Johannesburg, Jill Richards has performed internationally and is one of the few South African pianists who has been involved in the recording and promotion of South African contemporary piano music. She performs as a chamber musician and soloist and works with a variety of instrumentalists. Richards has had numerous works dedicated to her, and has given many first performances of South African works in South Africa and abroad.

Tickets will be on sale at the door at R30, R20 and R10 . Bookings and more information about this concert as well as other concerts presents by the UND School of Music from Debbie Mari on 031 260 3353.
