HANKINSON FORGES CLOSER KZN LINKS (article first published : 2003-02-19)

Michael Hankinson, popular conductor and musical director (and founder of the Durban City Orchestra) and Philipp Maier – current conductor and musical and artistic director of the DCO have combined their extensive musical talents to further classical music in KZN.

Michael Hankinson and Philipp Maier share many similar talents, in conducting, composing, performing and running their own recording studios, but it is their passion for the nurturing and development of classical music in South Africa that has brought about this recent initiative.

The Durban City Orchestra, the oldest symphonic orchestra in the country, also performs as the Gateway Philharmonic Orchestra and consists of 50 members, ranging in ages from 15 to 82 years of age. This amateur/teaching orchestra will receive a gigantic boost from Michael Hankinson in a “reciprocity” arrangement that sees the sharing of musical arrangements written by Michael Hankinson and Philipp Maier. They will share scores that they have personally arranged for orchestra to broaden the musical repertoire of their programmes. In addition they will share players where possible, for performances in Durban.

Says Mr Hankinson “as the founder of the DCO I have a soft spot for the nurturing of this amateur/teaching Orchestra, and after seeing the amount of energy that Philipp Maier has put into the last 17 concerts in 2002, I am happy to assist where possible, through my work and business contacts”. This personal assistance will take the form of assisting Philipp Maier with finding players and scores and other mutual musical projects, also involving Hankinson’s own recording studio “Stone Music Productions”.

Philipp Maier, who runs The Sound Factory Recording Studio in Durban, is currently involved in producing Open your eyes – A Symphonic Rock Spectacular to be held in Durban on September 19 and 20 , which will also include the GPO.

“The combining and sharing of resources in this area of music on an educational and corporate side is essential to its longevity” – says Philipp Maier. “I am delighted to be in touch with and working again with such an experienced professional in the field of classical and other music productions”.
