SEX, TANGO AND EVERYTHING ELSE (article first published : 2003-01-31)

The sensuality of the tango juxtaposed with evocative songs and an illicit love affair is what theatre doyenne Dawn Lindberg will bring to the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre in February in her much-talked about Sex, Tango and Everything Else.

The show tells the story of an illicit love affair through narrative, song, contemporary dance and the tango. It is described as a "woman’s window on passion and pain, romantic love, desire, danger and loss".

Dawn Lindberg plays Odette, a cellist in a string quartet who pushes the conventional boundaries of relationships to their limits. Her cast of characters interacts as she tells her story in words, song, music and dance. Laced together with a handful of provocative songs, her realities and fantasies are stylistically played out as she takes the audience into her confidence.

Dawn is joined on stage by Durban’s much-loved Mary Ann de Wet – now living in Johannesburg. She makes a rare return to the Durban stage and is joined by long time friend - Fantastic Flying Fish Dance Company’s resident choreographer, David Gouldie.

The critically acclaimed Sex, Tango and Everything Else is written and performed by Dawn Lindberg with choreography by Adele Blank and Natalie Fisher of the Free Flight Dance Company with lighting and sound design by Des Lindberg and musical direction by Dave Pollecutt who wrote the music for African Footprint. Some of the songs included are The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face, If You Go Away and Sondheim’s Losing My Mind.

Sex Tango and Everything Else is suitable for adult audiences only and contains explicit scenes and language. It runs at the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre on campus from February 10 to 23. Book at Computicket on 011 340 8000 / 083 915 8000.
