DURBAN BLACK DRIFTERS (article first published : 2003-01-31)

Chris Ntuli, leader and founder of the well-known Isicathamiya group Durban Black Drifters, will tour 30 schools in the greater Durban Metro Townships over the next two months.

The Durban Black Drifters Isicathamiya Schools Workshop Project, which has visited over 700 schools in the rural and urban areas during the past seven years, is sponsored in its current programme by the National Arts Council (NAC).

This project coincides with Durban Black Drifters’ 10th Anniversary Celebrations starting on February 13 which will see them collaborating with big artists in the near future. It also celebrates the official launch of their debut album. This was put on hold last year after Chris Ntuli was injured in a car accident, which laid him off for almost four months.

Meanwhile, DBD Entertainment, a promotion wing of this innovative group, is busy putting final touches to its annual Isicathamiya High Schools’ Choir Competition which will be held at the BAT Centre on May 9. This year’s event will feature 50 schools from Durban townships and other parts of KZN. The event is sponsored for the third conservative year by Caltex Oil.

Durban Black Drifters owes its initial success to Caltex Oil, which sponsored the Isicathamiya workshops for three years from 1995 when the project first started.

All schools in the Durban Metropolitan area wishing to take part should contact Chris Ntuli immediately on (031) 705 7969 or 073 301 6740 or 083 306 8846. The closing date is March 31.
