CREATIVE KIDS IN CONCERT (article first published : 2003-01-15)

As part of the holiday entertainment offered by the Durban Botanic Gardens, an exciting offering of song, dance, drama and poetry will be presented in the Gardens by the children of the Um' Afrika Children's Home on January 17, 18 & 19.

There will be five performances taking place over three days: January 17 at 11h00 and two performances each day on January 18 and 19 at 11h00 and 14h00. Each performance lasts approximately one hour and will include gospel music, traditional Zulu dance, Kwaito dance, story telling and poetry. Of particular interest is the short drama segment How to live positively with HIV/AIDS.

Um Afrika Children's Home is a non-governmental organisation formed in September 1997 which aims to offer extra curricular activities for children living in settlements of Inanda, Indwedwe, Verulam, Phoenix, Amaphephetheni and Lamontville. Chairman of the Home, Themba Gwala, has been instrumental in producing a successful array of cultural arts programmes. Local children and unemployed adults provide the talent for these cultural and theatrical groups. The aim is to create awareness and educate both children and adults in terms of dealing constructively with important community issues.

Themba has succeeded in uniting over 55 various groups under the banner of Um' Afrika. These groups visit factories, schools, community halls, churches in and around Durban and KZN. Performances have also been held on the steps of the City Hall.

Such sterling work deserves recognition as it not only encourages children to stay off the streets but also brings out many hidden talents, allowing the children to creatively express themselves. Performances are free of charge but donations would be greatly appreciated.

For those interested in offering a more substantial donation to assist Themba Gwala to expand his valuable projects for children, the banking details are as follows: Account Name : Um'Afrika Children's Home; Standard Bank : Acc No 251424421; Verulam Branch Code 05-76-29-41
