SUNDAY JAZZ AT BEVERLY HILLS (article first published : 2002-12-25)

The Beverly Hill Sun Intercontinental in Umhlanga Rocks offers a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon. With the Indian Ocean as a backdrop, patrons are invited to enjoy a beautifully prepared buffet lunch at La Provence Restaurant and relax to the sounds of some of the best jazz duos in Durban.

Coming up on December 29 will be piano and saxophone duo John Edwards and Paul Kok.

Both graduates of the Jazz Department at the University of Natal, they are also founder members of the popular jazz quartet Inside Out which has been instrumental in developing Café Jazz in Durban. John Edwards composes music and this year he was the regional finalist in the Old Mutual Jazz Encounters. Paul Kok teaches saxophone at UND, as well as playing regular gigs with John. Together they produce a smooth professional sound and their repertoire encompasses a wide range of jazz styles.

Singer Carol Trench and pianist Evan Roberts will be the guest artists on January 5 and 12.

Carol Trench has been described as one of Durban’s best voices but it is her warmth and charming personality that also makes her a special performer and explains why she is so much in demand as an entertainer. As well as taking the lead in a number of successful supper theatre productions including Let’s Misbehave and Bloody Mary, Carol is the lead vocalist for Lounge Act, a jazz band that performs regularly on the Café Jazz circuit as well as entertaining corporate clients. Pianist and musical director Evan Roberts has worked all over the world, including Dubai, London and Malaysia. He is also with Lounge Act and has performed regularly with Carol on a number of successful projects. Together they present a polished jazz act with real warmth and superb musicianship.

Next up at the Beverley Hills Sunday jazz programme will be Natalie Rungan and Roland Moses.

Jazz singer Natalie Rungan won the Best Jazz Vocals Category in the National Old Mutual Jazz Encounters in 2001. Having travelled extensively on cultural and educational exchange programmes, she teaches voice at University of Natal and has a Masters degree in jazz performance and composition. She is accompanied by long-time friend and colleague, fellow Masters graduate Roland Moses who also distinguished himself in the Old Mutual Jazz Encounters last year. Moses lectures, performs and composes. Together they make fine music, choosing their favourite tunes from a very broad repertoire of quality jazz.

The music starts at 12h30 and finishes at 15h15. The buffet costs R140 per person and light meals, teas and drinks are available in the lounge. Call 031 561 2211 for more information.

The programme for February includes John Edwards and Paul Kok on February 2 and 9 followed by Carol Trench and Evan Roberts on February 16 and 23.
