FRANCOIS LE ROUX (article first published : 2002-11-18)

The famous French baritone François Le Roux will appear with the KZN Philharmonic as part of his South African tour.

François Le Roux's recording with orchestra of Albert Roussel's melodies directed by Jacques Mercier (BMG-RCA), won him the 1999 award of the Académie Charles Cros and has also been honoured with the rank of "Chevalier" in the "Ordre des Arts et Lettres" in 1996.

France's most famous baritone studied with François Loup in Tours, then with Vera Rosza and Elizabeth Grümmer at the Opéra-Studio in Paris. He won the María Canals competition in Barcelona (1978), then the Rio de Janeiro competition (1979).

He was a member of the Lyon Opera from 1980 to 1985, at which time his international career started to take off. His repertoire spans from Monteverdi to contemporary opera and his name is linked to the Debussy opera Pelléas et Mélisande, which he first performed as "Pelléas", then, in 1997, as "Golaud", on the biggest stages around the world.

He also teaches interpretation at prestigious venues in Helsinki, Cleveland and Buenos Aires, and each year at l'Académie Francis Poulenc of Tours which he founded in 1997.

The South African tour of François Le Roux will include a concert with the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra on November 21 in the City Hall at 19h30.
