LAST CHANCE TO SEE "SANTANA" (article first published : 2002-11-11)

This is the last chance for Santana fans to see the highly popular show Santana which played to packed houses at the Playhouse Cellar recently. (see review on artSMart in Supper Theatre)

The producers of the show were inundated with calls from people who left it too late to book for tickets when the show closed early October. When the well-known Thirsty's Pub on the waterfront offered them a three day slot from November 26 to 28, Stuart Mey decided to give Santana enthusiasts a final opportunity to see this "foot stomping ace showband", as described by Billy Suter in his review in The Mercury.

The distinctive sounds of Carlos Santana's music is performed by seven highly talented musicians, playing as close as possible to the original sound. This musical tribute covers 30 years of the legendary musician's classic sound, from the early 70's, to his latest Grammy award winning album Super Natural. Lovers of Santana's music, should not miss this show which is of a high level of sound and musicianship.

The line-up of hits are all from Santana's classic albums - Abraxas, Freedom, Inner Secrets and include numbers such as Black Magic Woman, Evil Ways, Oye Como Va and Samba Pa Ti.

When playing in the Cellar, Santana not only appealed to ardent fans of this distinctive sound of haunting melodies and percussion but succeeded in converting many others, who returned to see the show several times.

Featuring Stuart Mey, Dave Arnold, Bruce Boom and Ian Webster, with three talented younger musicians - 18 year old Rowan Stuart (who played the lead in the Themi Venturas production The Guitar that Rocked the World), fellow cast member from the same show, Andy Turrell (21), and introducing newcomer to the musical entertainment scene and the only female in the cast, Tory Cassells (19) on keyboard and vocals.

Santana will play at Thirsty's from November 26 to 28 after which the show will go on tour. Booking is essential through Computicket on 083 915 8000 or 011 340 8000 or book at Thirsty's, through Sandy on 031 337 9212 (o/h only). The normal Thirsty's al la carte menu will be available before the show, which will start at 20h00.
