TRANSAFRICA EXPRESS (article first published : 2002-10-24)

Guy Wood (Bean Bag Bohemia), Alex Peltz (barGO) and Neil Comfort (Rainbow Jazz Club, Bandwagon Afrika) are pleased to announce that with immediate effect they have taken on the running of the restaurant and bar at the BAT Centre in the Small Craft Harbour.

This is a temporary arrangement due to the fact that the premises will be subject to a public tender process with the successful applicants tender to be ratified by the BAT Centre's Board of Trustees. They have agreed to operate the business in the interim due to the previous tenants vacating the premises without notice.

The immediate goal of TransAfrica Express will be to offer a superior level of service never before experienced at the bar. A tantalizing bar menu is already available and this was launched last week with much success. A new menu is being finalised for the restaurant and will be available as soon as much needed repairs and renovations are complete.

Here’s a small taste of what is to come: Moroccan cous-cous salad presented on lettuce variety with sweet potato, vegetables & coriander (R18); Mozambican roast vegetable salad served with a crushed cashew nut, coriander & honey vinaigrette (R19); Spiced chicken livers served in a north African tangine flavored with coriander & cumin served with ujeqe steamed bread (R20); Chicken wings prepared with harissa served with roast chick pea dip & pita bread –(R16), and Chicken tikka masala prepared on a bamboo skewer served with pita bread & salsa of plum tomatoes (R20). They also have some of the best hot chips in town at R10 a plate!

“With regards to live music and other artistic attractions (dance, theatre, storytelling, poetry, arts and crafts), performers and public can rest assured that we will endeavour to ensure the highest standards of service and production are provided,” says Neil Comfort.

Coming up this week will be the Sundowners on October 25 from 17h00 to 19h00 which will feature the Dick Hathorn Trio and Jazz on the Deck on October 27 from 16h00 to 18h00 which will present Imagine That! A reminder that in the event of inclement weather, Sunday jazz sessions will be moved to the restaurant. There is no cover charge for any of the above events.
