DRAKENSBERG BOYS’ CHOIR AUDITIONS (article first published : 2002-10-24)

Have you ever thought of giving your son the opportunity of attending the Drakensberg Boys’ Choir School? If not, and if he has the potential, you could be denying him the chance of a lifetime!

The Choir School is privately funded and dedicated to developing the inherent potential and talent of boys from all walks of life. It is set in idyllic surroundings in the heart of the Drakensberg, offering pupils a unique understanding and respect of nature, environment and conservation.

Of course, it is music and singing that the Choir School is most famous for and this forms the heart of the school. In the opinion of many who have heard choirs all over the world - and the Boys’ Choir in fact has several medals and awards from International festivals and competitions to back up this opinion - this reputation is hard earned and the source of much pride.

It also has the unfortunate effect of perhaps intimidating many potential young choristers who shy away from even auditioning for the Choir, because they fear they would never be good enough to be accepted.

“This perception is unfortunate, because we obviously do not expect new boys to be fully fledged singers,” says Anthony Parnell, Rector of the DBC School. “It is our role at the Choir School to develop the boys to this level, but naturally it takes time. To qualify for acceptance to the Choir School we need to identify potential and enthusiasm. If a boy has this, we can develop him. In fact, it normally takes a new boy entering the Choir School six to nine months to achieve the coveted “Concert Status”. During this period his voice and musical knowledge is developed so that he can join one of the two official choirs at the Choir School, and become a true Drakie.”

Once Concert Status is achieved, a world of opportunities opens up that no other school could possibly offer. Television appearances, the making of CDs, concert tours all over the country, special event performances and even International concert tours, are all part of the life of a Drakie. This year the Choir toured to Japan, and next year, concert tours to the United States and possibly China are on the agenda!

If you would like to have your son (currently in Grades 3 to 6) auditioned, contact the Director of Academics, Andrč Oosthuizen, at +27 (0)36 468 1012 to make an appointment. Auditions will also be held after the concerts of the DBC’s forthcoming annual Noël Tour. Make sure that you do not miss this opportunity! You never know, your son might surprise you and open up the door to an opportunity to join an elite group of youngsters and tour the world whilst developing into a first class singer, musician and person.

The Drakensberg Boys’ Choir will perform at the Hilton College Theatre on November 18 at 19h30. Tickets and more information from the theatre on 033 343-0126.
