CEUX QUI MARCHENT DEBOUT (article first published : 2002-09-24)

In Durban to appear on September 28 at the Standard Bank Awesome Africa Music Festival, is Ceux Qui Marchent Debout (CQMD - Those Who Walk Standing).

Inspired by names such as James Brown, Bootsy Collins, Maceo Parker and The JB's among others, this Parisian brass band has already energised city halls, streets and bars around the world.

The band consists of seven talented and original musicians who have developed a distinctive style, shaped by various influences such as funk, soul, reggae and ska music. Their driving rhythm is sustained by two impressive drummers. The sousaphone keeps the bass going while the banjo peals out honeyed tones in the purest funk tradition. Outlined by trumpet and trombone, the melodies are worthy of the best seventies black American groups. Their instruments being stripped of inessentials and linked by HF transmission, the musicians preserve the freedom of brass bands in the New Orleans tradition, while mingling with the audience. CQMD is essentially a performing band, expert at driving the audience into a frenzy.

CQMD is a funky, offbeat brass band that gained a reputation playing in Parisian bars, in the street and at various festivals and concerts. CQMD was invited to give its first concert performance with Bootsy Collins at the Bataclan in July 1995.

CQMD's musical career includes an equal number of jazz and rock festivals. The band has become very sought after by the most contemporary music venues. Most of all, CQMD is very proud to have been acclaimed by its counterparts in New Orleans!
