WOLFGANG SENGSTSCHMID (article first published : 2002-09-2)

The next prestigious international artist to perform for Friends of Music will be violinist Wolfgang Sengstschmid.

As a child, his musical talent was such that he was admitted to the Musikhochschule Vienna at the age of eight. There he studied for many years with Rainer Kuechl, the leader of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. During that time he won numerous competitions and prizes. Later he continued his studies at the Conservatory Berne with Igor Ozim and at the Guildhall School of Music in London with Yfrah Neaman.

In 1991 he performed with the Vienna Chamber Orchestra in The Musikverein Hall Vienna and after that he gave concerts in major halls such as Musikverein Hall Vienna, Carnegie Hall New York, Wigmore Hall London, Philharmonie Köln and the Conservatory Moscow. He has performed as a guest soloist with the Tonkuenstler Orchestra Vienna, the Vienna Chamber Orchestra, the Berne Symphony Orchestra, the New York Virtuosi, the Brno Philharmonic Orchestra, the Sofia Opera Orchestra and the Kiev Chamber Orchestra.

Francois du Toit, acknowledged as one of South Africa’s leading concert pianists and musicians, will accompany Wolfgang Sengstschmid in this recital.

An Associate Professor of Piano at the University of Cape Town, he completed an Honours degree at the same university and holds diplomas up to Fellowship level from the Trinity College of Music, London. He studied for the Solistendiplom at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Hannover, Germany, under the renowned pedagogue Berndt Goetzke.

During his period of study abroad he distinguished himself in several important international piano competitions and won numerous top prizes.

The Wolfgang Sengstschmid recital takes place on September 3 at 19h45 at the Durban Jewish Club and the programme includes works by Bloch, Franck, Kreisler, Mozart and Wieniawski.

The prelude performer for the evening will be singer Selby Hlangu. He will perform I Got Plenty of Nothing from Porgy and Bess, Non Piu Andrai from Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro and Caccini’s Amarilli, Mia Bella.
