SIPHO GUMEDE (article first published : 2002-08-26)

The Rainbow Jazz Club, in association with Castle Milk Stout, is proud to present legendary Durban bassist Sipho Gumede in concert on September 1.

This date is exactly a year to the day since Neil and Nicola Comfort took up the role of custodians at South Africa's oldest jazz venue.

“Some 12 months and 12 phenomenal Castle Milk Stout jazz brew concerts later, we look back on a year that has brought the Rainbow spirit to the fore,” says Neil Comfort.

“Internationally acclaimed bassist Sipho Gumede's history with the Rainbow goes right back to 1983 when he first performed on the Rainbow stage as a member of the ground-breaking Afro Jazz group Sakhile. Since then he has become a "son" to the musically knowledgeable Rainbow audience. His performance on the December 16 of last year for our 20th birthday celebrations saw the Rainbow literally packed to the gills and rocking all afternoon.

“As always, patrons are assured of an epic performance from a musician who gives his all. For this show the programme will focus on material from his latest release From Me To You as well as many of the hit songs that have made Sipho Gumede a household name throughout South Africa.

“Top Durban saxophonist, Mandla Masuku, is now a permanent member of Sipho Gumede's seven piece group, so even more reason to not miss this show.”

Patrons are reminded that the Rainbow’s dress code is casual and cool. Adds Neil: “Because one thing is certain, the concert is gonna be hot hot hot!”

The Rainbow Restaurant Jazz Club is situated at 23 Stanfield Lane, Pinetown. Doors open at 12h00 and the show starts at 13h00. Tickets R40. Due to expectations that this show will sell out, supporters of the Rainbow and Sipho Gumede are urged to purchase their tickets in advance to avoid disappointment.
