BENJAMIN FOURIE (article first published : 2002-08-26)

A new face at the Music School on the Durban campus of the University of Natal is Benjamin Fourie who has taken over as piano lecturer from Ruth Goveia and Isabella Stengel who has retired from UND. Apart from his duties as a piano lecturer he will be Head of Practicals.

Benjamin Fourie was born in Pietermaritzburg and grew up in Florida, Roodepoort. As a recipient of the SAMRO Overseas Study Bursary, he continued his study in music at the Hochschule fuer Musik in Detmold in Germany, after graduating from the University of Pretoria in 1985. During 1987 he also received instruction from Prof. Aloys Kontarski in Cologne.

From 1989 till May this year he lectured at the College of the Arts in Windhoek, before recently moving to Durban.

Apart from teaching, he has given regular concerts, both as a soloist and in the field of chamber music, in South Africa and Namibia. His concert tours have also taken him to Germany, France, the Czech Republic and Bulgaria. In addition he has made two CD recordings of piano music by South African composers.

He has received a number of international awards by the International Biographical Centre in Cambridge, as well as the American Biographical Institute, and his biography has been published in several biographical reference works.

The UND School of Music will present piano recitals by Benjamin Fourie on September 2 at 12h15 in a free lunch-hour concert at Howard College Theatre as well as on October 16 at 19h30 in Howard College Theatre.
