WINNERS OF STEEL DRUM FESTIVAL (article first published : 2002-08-25)

The 8th People’s Bank Steel Drum Festival, with additional support from Nedcor, was held on August 24 at the Durban Botanic Gardens Lake and was as successful as previous events. Run by Bryan Clarke and Dobri Paliev and initially an outreach project of the KZN Philharmonic, the festival saw some 63 bands taking part in the competition.

This year, the Orphans of Aids Trust brought 750 children to the festival to enjoy the music and the beautiful surroundings of the Durban Botanic Gardens. The KZNPO entertained the crowds for an hour before the Steel Drum Festival competition started in earnest.

The results of the Primary Schools competition are as follows: In first place, the Peoples Bank Trophy was deservedly won by HP Ngwenya Artistes (community centre band) who put in a particularly fine performance. In second place for the Sasol trophy was Maris Stella and Northcrest Noise Makers won the Troubadour Trophy in third place.

The winner of the High School competition and the Nedcor trophy was Hillcrest High School, followed by Rossburgh: The Groovys in second place for the Troubadour Trophy.

Sacred Heart received the National Arts Council trophy for the Most Outstanding Single Performance. The SDF Trophy for Most Improved Junior School went to Northdene Preparatory and the KZNPO Spirit Trophy was awarded to St Benedicts High.
