BAROQUE 2000 (article first published : 2002-08-11)

Baroque 2000 will perform a brass and organ concert on August 11 in St Thomas' Church, Musgrave Road, at 11h15. A mixture of Baroque and Renaissance music, the programme will focus on the music of Gabrieli and features a brass quintet, woodwind quartet and organ.

Renaissance music is famously polyphonic and in this concert, up to 15 different parts will be heard playing together. In addition to polyphonic works, double and triple choir pieces - featuring two and three parts in a stereo effect will be played. Other original brass and woodwind choir compositions by Johann Helmich Roman and Giles Farnaby will also be performed.

Baroque 2000 musicians are a small and extremely dedicated group says their leader Michel Schneuwly: "We do not hire musicians to do a “gig”, this is not just a “gig:. This is about the passion and the love of Baroque music. It is a very special, long-term project which needs to be nurtured in order to keep Baroque music alive and appreciated as it should be."

Schneuwly believes very strongly in the importance of authenticity. Great care is taken to ensure that everything about the music is as close to the original Baroque sound as possible on modern instruments. This is one of the things that has made the Baroque 2000 concerts so popular with music aficionados and the general public. The quiet serenity and natural acoustics of St. Thomas' Church is another draw card that adds to the experience and the authenticity of the concerts.

Tickets R40 at the door or through Computicket.
