AWESOME AFRICA (article first published : 2002-08-5)

The Standard Bank Awesome Africa Music Festival has developed a unique multi-cultural musical identity, which has translated extremely positively into national and international acclaim. “The general theme of the music focuses on collaborations, generally with artists from the African Continent - and represents a massive cross-cultural fusion of energy that attracts musicians and music lovers both nationally and internationally,” said Awesome Africa’s Dan Chiorboli.

A broad spectrum of exciting and current music will be featured this year - from Roots and Ethnic music from around the world (but focusing mostly on Africa) to Rock, Reggae, Kwaito, Hip-hop, Gospel / Sacred music, Poetry and with a special emphasis on Jazz via Standard Bank’s esteemed Joy of Jazz concert series. Zulu musical traditions such as isicathimiya, maskanda, mbube, mbaqanga and various cultural dances are vigorously preserved and highlighted alongside the more contemporary forms.

The international contingent includes the great Coite D’Ivorian reggae star Tikan Jah Fakoly, and musicians from countries like Senegal, Burundi, Ghana, Reunion, Madagascar, Italy, USA, UK, Norway and France and Namibia will be represented. The Festival will be held at the Durban Exhibition Centre, from September 27 to 29, and tickets will be available from Computicket.
