KOLLIG FEST (article first published : 2002-08-3)

Nine of the best productions from this year’s Klein Karoo Kunstefees, the arts event held annually in Oudtshoorn, are to be featured in August’s three-day Kollig Festival.

Presented by the Teatergilde association in Durban, which sends a delegation to Oudtshoorn every year to select highlights for Durban from the mostly Afrikaans fare, the festival highlights include a number of productions that will appeal to English speakers.

One of them is the new show by acclaimed a capella group, Cutt Glas. Anna Davel will present Cutt Blanche which is scheduled for 20h45 on August 22. The production, in English and Afrikaans, has the talented team conducting interviews à la M-Net’s Carte Blanche. It also has the women introducing their own Big Brother series.

Opening the Festival will be Steeks, with Sewende Laan stars Chris Vorster and Anna-Mart van der Merwe scheduled for 18h00 on August 22. A 75-minute comedy centered on marriage, it focuses on a couple constantly at loggerheads and is rated a must-see.

Klassieke P LLe(MB) , a 60-minute musical revue directed by Janice Honeyman and teaming Jannie Moolman (tenor), Karen Meiring (soprano) and Janine Neethling, is set for 17h45 on August 23. The festival’s 19h45 choice on August 23 is a show titled Geblikte Afrikaans, featuring a rock group from Bloemfontein called Ddisselblom. It comprises Jaco Spies, John van Huyssteen, Lienka Coetzee, Dave Houghton and John Smit. Also worth checking out is Dorsland, with Lochner de Kock, Richard van der Westhuizen and Andrew Roos at 21h45 on August 23, which focuses on the musical and comic talents of a trio playing guitar, congas and keyboards.

Sure to make an impression with younger audiences is Eden, billed as South Africa’s boy band sensation, comprising Sean Els, Jaco du Plessis, Paola Azevedo and Johan Vorster. The band is to rock the Port Natal Hall at 15h00 on August 24. Tickets R40. Koes – Die Musical! should be a crowd-puller. It teams Jolette Odendaal, Wikus du Toit, Alyzzander Fourie and Francois Henning under the direction of Hannes Muller. Set for 17h30 on August 24, it is said to be an energetic show meshing music, dance and comedy. Lizz Meiring’s acclaimed new show, Elke Ander Duim ‘n Dame, directed by Annalise Bosch, is the festival pick for 19h45 on August 24. The comedienne turns the spotlight on the role of different South African women. The last of the events is a performance by rocker Karen Zoid and her band, scheduled for 21h45 on August 24. They will be accompanied by guitarist Don Reynecke, bassist Dave Manchip and drummer Wyn van der Walt.

As an added attraction at this year’s festival, books and art will also be exhibited and sold. There will also be a special breakfast served at 09h30 on August 24 in a large refreshments tent outside the school hall. Ddisselblom will perform in the tent and artists appearing on the festival bill will be present. Tickets R40. The refreshment tent will be open to the public from 17h00 until late each day of the festival.
