CROONING DOWN MEMORY LANE (article first published : 2002-06-30)

Loosely based on the scenario of a closing theatre where performers gather for their final farewells in musical style, Centre Stage/Radio Algoaís production Crooning Down Memory Lane is rather uncoordinated although the cast give their all with energy and enthusiasm. Their commitment to their musical material is infectious and transfers itself to the audience who respond with delight.

There is a host, a cleaning lady who helps at the bar, a group of singers and a trumpeter who also plays the drums.

Either individually or in a group they sing well-known and much loved numbers such as Mac the Knife, New York, My Way, Whatís New Pussycat?, Baby itís Cold Outside and Pretty Woman. Highlights for me were Please Release Me and Rain on my Parade.

Thereís some gentle repartee and corny old vaudeville jokes get thrown in for good measure.

In the end itís the music that drives the show. With numbers made famous by the likes of Frank Sinatra, Neil Diamond, Elvis Presley, Tom Jones such as these the show cannot fail but provide a light hearted hour or so of musical entertainment. But the show could do with much stronger direction . Ė Caroline Smart
