ACCORDIONS IN ACCORDANCE (article first published : 2002-06-10)

Marc Berthoumieux, Régis Gizavo, David Mzwandile represent three musicians, three nationalities and three cultures joined by a true artistic project around the same instrument. On the suggestion of Alliances Française, these three accordionists will work together for 10 days to create a composition at the crossroads between jibe and jazz, which will be performed in the course of a South African tour in July 2002.

Marc Berthoumieux is French. In 1991, he settled in Paris and turned to the composition and writing of jazz. His first album in 1998 was considered an overwhelming success by members of the profession and the public.

Régis Gizavo is Malagasy. The diatonic accordion is one of the key instruments of traditional Malagasy music but because of the poverty that has stricken the country and its musicians, the instrument is becoming ever more rare.

David Mzwandile is South African. He made his début on stage with the Boyoyo Boys and then played on stage or in studio with the likes of Mahlatini and the Mahotella Queens, Izintombi Zomaya, Joe Mafela and Amaswazi Emvelo.

After a Residency in Johannesburg at Mega Music, the show tours South Africa, reaching the Alliance Française of Durban on July 2 before moving on to the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown.
