HOMETALK (article first published : 2002-06-10)

Hometalk is an exciting new theatre project which pays homage to South Africa’s rich and diverse history of popular music. It is to be staged at the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre from June 22 to July 21 by Themi Venturas and long-time collaborator Arnie Field in association with the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre to celebrate their 21st birthday.

Remember "Braai vleis, rugby sunny skies and Chevrolet.", Pata Pata; Ag Pleez Daddy, Paradise Road, Charlie, Substitute and Master Jack. Remember the sounds of Clout; Dolly Rathebe; Rabbitt; Juluka; Miriam Makeba; Ballyhoo; the African Jazz Pioneers; Four Jacks and a Jill; Ladysmith Black Mambazo; Lucky Dube and Jonathan Butler. They will be remembered in what promises to be a fantastic celebration of everything South African.

“For so long we have looked abroad for our inspiration to stage musicals but now the time has come to find our inspiration closer to home and celebrate all that is proudly South African,” say the organisers of Hometalk. “The show takes us on a journey back to the heady days of Sophiatown, to the 60’s where hippiedom took on a South African flavour, the rocking 70’s and 80’s where Springbok Radio (and Springbok hits) ruled the airwaves at a time when international isolation gave us free reign to create our own distinct sound and heroes. The show takes us up to the significant 90’s where music was an integral part of celebrating our freedom. No cultural grouping or music style is left untouched - ensuring that all South Africans will groove together!”

Hometalk is conceived by Themi Venturas and Arnie Field who both appear in the show. They are joined on stage by Nothando Mbanda and Karen Campbell Gilles with choreography by Thulebona Mzizi and musical arrangements by Dawn Selby. Hometalk is directed by Themi Venturas who has also directed such award-winning productions as The Princess Magogo ka Dinuzulu opera, Taxi Jam, The Guitar that Rocked the World; Jimbo; Good Vibrations, Shoo Bop Shoo Bop, Cantina Tequila and Curtain Up.

The production opens on June 22, the exact date that the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre opened 21 years ago. Performances Tuesdays to Saturdays at 19h30 and Sundays at 18h30. Book at Computicket.
