STARLIGHT POP OPERA (article first published : 2002-06-9)

With the annual KZN Philharmonic Starlight Pop Opera concert playing at the Durban Country Club this Sunday (June 9), the spotlight falls on FNB Corporate, the sponsor of this premiere outdoor event on the Durban entertainment calendar.

"This is the first year FNB Corporate is sponsoring Starlight Pop Opera," says the bank's regional director, Eddie Viljoen. "Traditionally the event has been backed our affiliate, Rand Merchant Bank, who still hosts the event in Gauteng and in the Western Cape. But here in Durban, from a branding awareness point of view, we felt it was more appropriate for FNB Corporate to step in and front this exciting event.

"FNB's commitment to ensuring the sustainable nature of this musical event extends to our commitment to the orchestra it features, the KZN Philharmonic. This is in line with the bank's support of the arts in this country, as is seen in the annual FNB Vita Awards, presented for performance excellence throughout South Africa.

"We wish to get the word out there to our fellow corporate organisations that an event such as Starlight Pop Opera offers a superb showcase for business sponsorship," says Viljoen, who voices a strong personal endorsement of the role the performing arts play in the spiritual development and social awareness among communities around the world.

This weekend's bumper musical programme features popular guest stars Linda Bukhosini, Bongani Tembe, Joseph Clark, Megan Kahts, Nondumiso Tembe, Theo Bophela and the Kearsney College Choir. Items to be performed include highlights from well-loved Verdi and Puccini operas, a sprinkling of African Jazz and an attractive mix of light musical items by Andrew Lloyd Webber, Jerome Kern and Richard Rodgers, among others.

Gates open at 15h00 but patrons are encouraged to arrive early to avoid the last minute rush. Tickets at the gate R55 (R25 for children). Book through Computicket on 011 340-8000, 083 391-8000 or on the Internet at www.computicket.com. Free secure parking is available at the Absa Stadium.

In the event of rain the concert will take place tomorrow (Monday) June 10 at 18h30.
