ZURICH STRING TRIO (article first published : 2002-06-7)

The internationally acclaimed Zurich String Trio are set to delight local music-lovers with two performances in Durban next week.

The first of these appearances is at the Jewish Club in Old Fort Road, on June 11 at 19h45, when they will give a Friends of Music recital, performing music by Haydn, Reinecke, Schubert and Beethoven.

The Trio also appear as guest artists with the KZN Philharmonic and the Netherlands conductor, Arjan Tien, in the Durban City Hall on June 13 at 19h30. In this World Symphony Series Winter Season concert they will perform rarely-heard triple concertos by Mozart and by the contemporary Swiss composer, Peter Mieg. This programme also features Mozart's Masonic Funeral Music and Stravinsky's Pulcinella Suite.

After its foundation in 1977 the Zurich String Trio soon made its way to being one of the world’s top string ensembles. In addition to their technical perfection and natural musicality, the members of the trio developed an unmistakable style of their own, a unique combination of traditional romantic virtuosity and classical authentic musicianship.

The Zurcih String Trio gained its reputation by its interpretation of the classical chamber music repertoire but equally as much from performing works by contemporary composers such as W Vogel, H Villa Lobos, K Penderecki and A Schnittke. Regular appearances at leading festivals for contemporary music, such as the Warsaw Autumn in Poland, as well as countless performances of new pieces by Swiss, European and Asian composers testify the trio’s devotion to the music of our own times. Many composers dedicate their works to the Zurich String Trio.

The ensemble regularly tours Europe, North and South America, the near and far East, their trips being accompanied by master classes as well as numerous radio and television broadcasts. Members Boris Livschitz (violin), Zvi Livschitz (viola) and Mikael Hakhazaryan (cello) appear in a larger formation called The Zurich String Quintet.

Booking for both events is at Computicket
