CHORAL PRAISE (article first published : 2002-06-4)

Over the last two years the Schola Cantorum of St Henry’s Marist Brothers’ College and the Choir and Orchestra of St Mary’s Diocesan School for Girls have presented very successful concerts in Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Musgrave Road.

This year is no exception. On June 14 at 19h30, they will present another such concert in Holy Trinity Church joined by the Choir of St John’s College, Houghton, and the Sine Nomine Vocal Ensemble. Directors of the various ensembles are Ronel Laidlaw and Lindsay Johnstone (St Mary’s), Cameron Upchurch (St Henry’s) and Bennie Oosthuizen (St John’s).

The programme ranges from Renaissance choral music to sacred music of the late Romantic period. Doubtless the highlight on the programme will be the excerpts from Mozart’s Requiem, performed by the combined choirs and orchestra.

For lovers of sacred choral music in particular, this is a must. Tickets R20 (R10 scholars) available at the door or from St Henry’s Marist Brothers’ College on 261-7369 (between 08h00 and 15h00).

On June 16 at 10h00, the boys of the Marist Brothers’ Schola Cantorum and St John’s College Choir will also sing Solemn Mass in Holy Trinity Church. Entrance is free and all are welcome.
