KZN Philharmonic’s 2002 World Symphony Series Winter Season is underway.

The sensational young Russian virtuoso, Olga Kern, winner of last year's Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in the USA, is one of KZNPO's star soloists this season

KZNPO's 2002 World Symphony Series Winter Season opens in the Durban City Hall on May22, with weekly Thursday concerts thereafter from May 30 to June2O.

German conductor Bernhard Gueller opens the season on May 22 with Schubert's Rosamunde Overture, Schumann's Cello Concerto (with the acclaimed Armenian cellist Suren Bagratuni in the spotlight) and Tchaikovsky's Symphony No 4.

British based Chinese conductor En Shao returns to the podium on May 30 for Brahms' Variations on a Theme by Haydn, Glazunov's Saxophone Concerto, played by the brilliant young British soloist, Sarah Field, and Dvorak's Symphony No 6.

En Shao takes the podium for Mahler's Symphony No 5 on June 6.

Popular Netherlands conductor Arjan Tien returns on June 13 and teams with the internationally celebrated Zurich String Trio as soloists in two rarely heard triple concertos, by Mozart, and the contemporary Swiss composer Peter Mieg. This adventurous programme also includes Mozart's Masonic Funeral Music and Stravinsky's Pulcinella Suite.

Russian virtuoso pianist Olga Kern (winner of last year's Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in the US) takes centre stage in a performance of Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No 1 on June 20. Conducted by Arjan Tien, this final Winter Season concert also features Tchaikovsky's Romeo and Juliet Overture and the Symphony in D minor by Cesar Franck.
