UND LUNCH HOUR (article first published : 2002-05-11)

The University of Natalís Music School holds regular weekly free concerts during the semester in Howard College Theatre at 12h15. This is the line-up for May:

May 6: Claude Bolling's Picnic Suite for Guitar, Flute, Piano, Drums & Double Bass

May 8: Zama Mchunu and Duduzile Zondi -African Music & Dance

May 13th: Serge Filiatreault trombone recital

May 15: New Music by Jurgen Brauninger, Sazi Dlamini and Ben Turner

May 20: Sarah Field - classical saxophone recital, an entertaining, fresh approach to the performance genre. A graduate from the Royal Northern College of Music, Kent, UK, Sarah has been teaching and performing with Yehudi Menuhin's Live Music Now project which has been touring internationally. As a concert soloist, Sarah has made numerous appearances. Wherever she goes she is said to widen the appeal and knowledge of the classical saxophone repertoire. She has also been a soloist on both trumpet and saxophone with the BBC Concert Orchestra live on BBC.

May 22: Students from the Centre for Jazz & Popular Music

May 27: KZN Philharmonic Orchestra with students from the University of Natal School of Music (NB: This concert is at the Rick Turner Students Union Hall, UND)

May 29: Brendan Hollins piano recital. This fourth year BMus student at the School of Music, UND, was awarded a SAMRO bursary for tertiary study as well as a University of Natal Calssical Music scholarship. In 2000 he was awarded a study bursary by the UNISA Music Foundation to attend courses and Masterclasses linked to the 9th Unisa International Piano Competition in Pretoria. Brendan in presently studying with Isabella Stengel.
