USTAD RAVI (article first published : 2002-05-6)

The revitalisation of traditional Indian music and the sustenance of this art form is gaining momentum as Ustad Ravi profoundly manipulates his expertise through a constructive programme of teaching and performance of Indian music. This initiative is supported by the National Arts Council of South Africa.

Ustad Ravi’s commendable record of achievements in the field of Indian music has declared him a “major musician on the South African scene” (Critic George Nisbet). As the only Indian artist to perform at the presidential inauguration in May 1994 and the SABC re-launch in February 1995, Ustad Ravi seeks to re-enact Indian classical music in order that it retains its identity in the diversity of musical styles.

Vocal and instrumental music lessons will be conducted on a weekly basis at the Playhouse Company’s premises in Ramsay Road, Mayville. For details of venues and special tuition arrangements, contact Shakeel Isseri on 083 301 2983 or telefax 031 409-4139.

Enrolment takes place at the above venue on Wednesdays between 17h00 and 18h00. Students will be assessed on a continuous basis. Community organisations, NGO’s and patrons of the arts and culture are encouraged to support the music tuition and performance programmes.

Ustad Ravi was the first South African Indian artist to record on the Columbia Label of the EMI Recording Company. He pioneered the “Sitar” and history of Indian music courses at the University of Durban Westville as the country'’ first Indian music lecturer.
