EMERGING SOUNDS COMPETITION (article first published : 2002-04-20)

Durban music venue Burn at 112 Umbilo Road will be hosting the regional section of the RP Studio’s Emerging Sounds competition from May to July. Current top bands such as Not My Dog, Saron Gas, Fruit Fly Navigators, Never The Machine Forever, Sideshow, 340ml, Jane Doe, Pestroy, Flat World Society, Superjuice and Silex all started their careers via this prestigious competition.

Official rule books and entry forms are now available at Burn and the first heats take place from May 3 to June 28. These will be followed by the Semi Finals from July 5 to 19, with the Finals taking place on July 26.

Three bands will perform each heat. There will only be one winner based on the highest score. The overall winner will win recording time at SABC in Durban with the opportunity of performing the national final at Oppikoppi. Here the prizes include 10 days recording at RP Studio's in Johannesburg produced by top producer Evert de Munnik. The competition, which has run eight successful campaigns in the past, is backed by Barney Simon and will receive regular coverage.

The regional winner will be sponsored by BURN for their trip to the National finals as well as extra support to give them the best chance of winning the nationals and placing Durban firmly on the live music map.

The competition will also be used to source out new talent to be marketed by Burn Events & Promotions.

Bands must perform five songs each - firstly four originals and then a fifth song encompassing three well-known SA bands in the form of a medley covering act. The song lyrics may be changed but the melody must remain recognisable. Copies of the judging sheets are available at Burn so that bands can plan their set for maximum points.
